Salvation, Faith, and Identity in His Name
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” (John 1:12).
From the opening of John’s Gospel, the Holy Spirit reveals a life-changing truth: there is transforming power in believing on the name of Jesus Christ. To believe on His name is far more than acknowledging His existence. It is to trust in all that His name represents: His deity, His authority, His sacrifice, His resurrection, and His saving grace.
Through faith in Him, the Father adopts us as His own children. We do not merely carry His name outwardly; we belong to Him and bear His life within us. “He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:18)
Salvation and condemnation hinge upon one decisive question: What has a person done with Jesus Christ? His name is never neutral. Those who believe find forgiveness, acceptance, and eternal life; those who reject Him remain under condemnation. As Scripture declares: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
This is of utmost importance; the Father has provided only one Saviour and only one way of redemption. This truth must be firmly understood; the Holy Spirit directed the Apostle John to state:”But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.” (John 20:31)
Eternal life is not earned through religion or human effort. It is received through faith in the Son of God. His name is the source of life because He alone conquered sin and death. The Apostle John also writes: “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.” (1 John 2:12)
Our forgiveness rests entirely upon Christ’s finished work. It is not based on our merit but on His righteousness and the power of His atoning blood. Faith in Christ is not optional: It is never left to our discretion; it is a directive, it is a command.” And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another.” (1 John 3:23)
Those who truly believe in His name will increasingly reflect His character. The world must not only hear the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, but it should see His life revealed in those who belong to Him. Finally, John gives believers unshakable assurance: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)
Faith in the name of Jesus brings certainty, not uncertainty. Those who trust in Him stand secure in His covenant, justified by His blood, and kept by His power. The challenge is clear: every person must respond to the name of Jesus Christ. There is no other name that saves, no other sacrifice that reconciles sinners to God, and no other source of eternal life. To believe on His name is to receive life; to reject Him is to remain under condemnation.
