A Strong Word of Caution.
What Is It To Die In One’s Sin?
There are words of Jesus that may not always be heard from the pulpit, but that is no excuse for their absence from our lives. The words of Jesus through His gospel warning are both searching and urgent.
Jesus declared: “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come… Therefore, I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”John 8:21–24. Jesus spoke plainly: to die in sin is to die separated from Almighty God, without forgiveness and without the life that is found only in Jesus Christ.
Sin is not merely a weakness to be managed. It enslaves, deceives, blinds, hardens the heart and separates mankind from God. Jesus declared: “Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin.”John 8:34. Sin promises freedom, but it produces bondage and ultimately death. Yet Jesus offers total freedom: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.”John 8:36
There is no neutral ground in the lives of humanity. Either Jesus Christ reigns, or sin reigns. “No man can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24). Without the new birth, there is no entrance into the kingdom of God: This is why Jesus declared“Except you be born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God.”John 3:3
Jesus said, “Where I go, you cannot come” (John 8:21). Those who die in their sin cannot follow Him into eternal life. He alone is the way: “I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes unto the Father, but by Me.”John 14:6
Faith in Jesus Christ is therefore not a casual acknowledgement of His name. It is wholehearted trust and surrender to the Son of God. Jesus declared: “He who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life.”John 5:24
The tragedy of dying in sin is not simply ignorance; it is refusing the truth when it is revealed. Jesus said: “You will not come to Me, that you might have life.”John 5:40
To die in sin is to die without forgiveness, without cleansing, and without Christ. But freedom is offered now. There is still time to repent, believe, and turn to Him, and live constantly feeding upon His Word of life.
The words of Jesus are final. To die in sin is to die outside of Him, still under the guilt and dominion of sin. But to believe in Him, receive Him, and continue in Him is to pass from death unto life.
There is no other way and no alternative path to the Father. Jesus gave this warning, which is applicable today: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”Matthew 16:26
