Living and Overcoming Through the Word of God
Now when the tempter came to Jesus, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”But Jesus answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”Matthew 4:3–4.
The Lord’s response, “Man shall not live by bread alone,” is extremely significant because Jesus was identifying Himself with mankind and demonstrating that true life is found through complete dependence upon the Father’s Word. In doing so, Jesus Christ established the pattern that every child of Almighty God is called to follow.
When we as believers take the time to put away every preconceived thought, idea, teaching, and theory of men, and give ourselves to the leading and promptings of the Holy Spirit, our hearts become open to receive from the wealth of the Word of Jesus Christ. His Word will transform our lives and enable us to function in this world as genuine followers of Jesus.
It is vitally important that, as believers, we are never called to attempt to live our lives independently of Almighty God by relying upon our human reasoning, natural ability, or our personal strength, but through our continual dependence upon the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Jesus declared: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63
How essential it is to embrace the personal revelation that victory over temptation is never found in our human endeavour or self-determination alone. It is found in hearts that remain submitted to Almighty God’s voice and obedient to His truth.
Jesus therefore overcame satan, by living in perfect obedience as the last Adam, the true Son of Man, fully yielded to His Father. His victory demonstrates that the authority of God’s Word, received with faith and obeyed through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit, is sufficient to overcome every assault of the enemy.
This is of vast importance; Jesus stood and succeeded where Adam fell. In the wilderness, hungry and alone, Jesus refused to act independently of His Father. His answer cut through every snare of the tempter: “It is written.” The Son of Man lived in unwavering dependence upon the Word of God.
Whereas bread in the natural realm sustains the body for a little while, the Word of God sustains the inner man and leads to eternal life. Jesus later declared: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.” John 6:47
Herein is a vital revelation: Jesus preached what He lived, and lived what He preached. He showed that obedience to the Word is not merely desirable it is life itself. Just as the body weakens without food, so the inner man grows weak without continual nourishment from the Father’s Word. Jesus also declared: “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31–32
Every word that proceeds from the mouth of God carries life, truth, wisdom, and power. To neglect His Word is to become spiritually starved; to receive it with faith and obedience is to walk in the life that God Himself gives.
The temptation of Jesus therefore reveals something far greater than how He answered satan. It reveals how the Son of Man lived utterly dependent upon His Father, governed by His Word, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. And the same principle remains before every follower of Christ: life, strength, and victory are not found in independence from the Father, but in abiding in Jesus and taking Almighty God at His Word.
