A Warning from the Lord
Jesus issued a solemn warning that every person who professes to be his disciple must take seriously. If anyone does not abide in me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. John 15 : 6
It is important to understand the setting in which Jesus spoke these words. Jesus was in the upper room with His disciples, shortly before His arrest, trial and crucifixion. This was not a message addressed to unbelievers, but a solemn warning to those who claimed to belong to Him. Therefore, every believer should take these words personally and seriously.
They are not to be considered as mere suggestion, nor are they a matter of human opinion. They are the words of Jesus Christ. Concerning the necessity of abiding in Him, Jesus used the illustration of a branch and a vine to reveal a vital spiritual truth. A branch cannot live independently of the vine. If it ceases to abide in the vine, it withers. The same principle applies spiritually.
A profession of faith cannot replace a continuing relationship with Christ. Jesus said, Abide in me and I in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15 4 The issue is not merely the loss of fruit; it is the danger of separation from the source of life.
Jesus makes the consequence unmistakably serious. The branch that does not remain is cast out, withers, and is gathered and thrown into the fire. Do not treat sin and compromise lightly. These words should cause every believer to examine their own walk with Christ.
The following aspects are to be firmly embraced in our lives as believers.
- Do not presume upon God’s grace while deliberately continuing in sin.
- Do not allow compromise to become acceptable.
- Do not imagine that spiritual life can be sustained while drifting away from Jesus.
Jesus said, Without me you can do nothing.John 15 5 The call is to remain in him, hold fast to him, obey his words and continually draw life from him.
Remain in Christ. The urgency of Jesus’ words cannot be ignored. He does not present abiding in Him as an optional part of discipleship. His command is clear, Abide in Me. John 15 4 The only place of spiritual safety is in Jesus Christ.
The believer must therefore continually examine whether they are truly abiding in Him, walking in His ways and bearing the fruit that comes from a living relationship with the vine. This word is on my heart to share, not to scare. Let every believer take heed.
Do not play with sin. Do not make peace with compromise. Do not drift from Christ. Remain in Jesus. Hold fast to Him. Draw your life from Him without ceasing. The choice is serious. Jesus’ warning is unmistakable. To abide in Him is to bear fruit and live.
To refuse to remain in Him leads to withering and ultimately to judgement. Therefore, the question is not merely whether someone once professed faith in Christ. Are they abiding in Him now? Are they remaining in Him? Are they bearing fruit through Him? Are they continuing in His word and His ways? Jesus said, If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, so you will be my disciples. John 15 7-8,
The warning is serious.
The danger is real.
But so is the promise.
