“My Father and I are one.” (John 10:30)

This may appear to be a very brief opening verse of scripture, but the implications of these words must have an enormous impact on our lives as believers. These words of the Lord Jesus Christ stand among the most profound declarations ever spoken. They reveal not merely a close relationship between the Father and the Son, but a perfect unity that every believer must understand and embrace.

When the religious leaders demanded that Jesus plainly declare whether He was the Christ, His answer went far beyond what they expected: My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.”John 10:27-30.

The impact of these words was immediate. The Jews took up stones to kill Him because they understood exactly what Jesus was claiming, that He was equal to God. “You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” (John 10:33). They rejected the revelation standing before them because although they knew the written Word of God, they failed to recognise the Living Word, the  One of whom the Scriptures pointed to.

One in Eternal Existence.

Jesus Christ did not begin His existence in Bethlehem, for this unique reason, way before His birth, He was with the Father from eternity. “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.” Micah 5:2.

And Jesus prayed: “Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.” (John 17:5). The Father and the Son have always existed. There has never been a moment when the Son was not. What is true of the Father’s eternal nature is also true of the Son. This truth guards believers against every false doctrine that seeks to diminish the Person of Jesus Christ.

One in Nature.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus continually revealed His equality with the Father. For He declared:“My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” (John 5:17). The religious leaders understood the implication immediately: “He also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.” (John 5:18)

Jesus never acted independently of the Father. Everything He did revealed the Father’s heart, character, and power. “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me. But if I do… know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.(John 10:37-38). The miracles, healings, deliverances, and acts of compassion demonstrated the perfect unity between the Father and the Son.

One in Life.

The life possessed by the Father is the same life revealed in the Son. “For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself.(John 5:26). Jesus came to impart this divine life to all who believe. “I come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.(John 10:10). This eternal life is not merely endless existence. It is the very life of Almighty God imparted to the believer through the new birth. It is a life that overcomes sin, death, and darkness.

One in Purpose and Agreement.

There has never been division between the Father and the Son. At the baptism of Jesus, the Father publicly declared: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

At the Mount of Transfiguration, the Father again testified: This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear Him.” (Matthew 17:5)

The Father’s approval rested continually upon the Son because Jesus walked in complete obedience and perfect agreement with His will. Everything Jesus spoke, every miracle He performed, and every step He took revealed the Father’s purpose. “He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father. (John 14:9)

A Challenge to Every Believer.

The revelation that the Father and the Son are one is not merely a doctrine to be understood; it is a truth that demands a response. Jesus said: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.(John 10:27). True believers do more than admire Christ. They hear His voice, follow His leading, and submit to His authority.

The same unity that existed between the Father and the Son is to become the pattern for every disciple’s relationship with the Lord. The greatest danger is not ignorance of Scripture but refusing the revelation that Scripture presents. The Pharisees knew the writings but rejected the Son.

The challenge remains today: Will believers merely study Christ, or will they know Him? Will they simply acknowledge His words, or will they follow Him? The Father and the Son are one. To receive the Son is to receive the Father. To honour the Son is to honour the Father. To reject the Son is to reject the Father.

Therefore every believer must continually behold Jesus Christ, for in Him the fullness of the Father has been perfectly revealed, and through Him eternal life is freely given to all who hear His voice and follow Him.
