There is a growing tendency among believers to build their understanding of salvation, grace, and righteousness almost entirely upon the writings of the Apostle Paul.

It must never be forgotten that Jesus Christ alone is the Word made flesh, and His words are the foundation of all truth.

To exalt Paul’s words above those of Christ is to misunderstand both Paul and the purpose of the Gospel.

1. Jesus Christ Is the Final Authority

Before any apostle spoke, Jesus Himself declared that His words would never pass away.

In Matthew 24:35, Jesus said:

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”

Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1,14). His teachings are not opinions or interpretations, they are the eternal voice of God Himself. When He speaks, the Father speaks. When He commands, heaven stands still. No man, however inspired, can equal the direct voice of the Son of God.

In John 12:49, Jesus said:

“For I have not spoken of myself, but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

Therefore, the words of Jesus are not optional teachings to be filtered through the letters of Paul. Rather, all writings must be understood through the revelation of Christ’s own words.

2. Jesus Himself Warned Against Replacing His Commandments

Christ repeatedly emphasized obedience to His own teachings.

In John 14:15, Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

And again in John 14:21, He said:

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me.”

The authority of the apostles rests upon the foundation that they were witnesses of Christ and teachers of His commands. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus said:

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.”

Notice carefully that He did not say to teach their own revelations above His. Their mission was to carry His words to the ends of the earth. Every apostle’s message must therefore be judged by whether it agrees with what Christ Himself said.

3. Jesus Defined the Gospel Before Paul Ever Preached It

Many point to Paul as the one who revealed the “true gospel,” yet Jesus Himself declared the good news long before Paul’s ministry began.

In Mark 1:15, Jesus said:

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

Jesus defined the way to eternal life in unmistakable terms. In John 3:36, He said:

“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

He also made it clear that true faith must produce obedience and righteousness. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus said:

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.”

This is not legalism, it is love expressed through faithfulness. To follow Jesus is to obey Him, not merely to quote Paul while ignoring Christ’s voice.

4. The Words of Jesus Will Judge Every Soul

In the end, we will not be judged by denominational creeds or theological arguments. The Lord Himself said in John 12:48:

“He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.”

If the very words of Christ will judge us, then they must be our highest guide now. His Sermon on the Mount, His parables, His commands to love, forgive, and bear fruit, these are not suggestions for moral living, they are the essence of the Gospel that transforms hearts.

5. The Apostles Were Servants of Christ’s Words, Not Rivals

Every true apostle pointed back to Christ. In John 6:68, Peter declared:

“Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.”

Even the Father testified from heaven. In Matthew 17:5, we read:

“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear ye him.”

The command “hear ye him” is eternal. It is not “hear ye Paul,” nor “hear ye Peter,” but “hear ye Him.”

Conclusion: Return to the Words of Jesus

If we are to be true followers of Christ, we must return to His voice above all others. We must study the apostles through the lens of His teachings, not reinterpret His teachings through the lens of theirs.

Let every believer therefore humble themselves before the words of the Savior, remembering His eternal promise. In John 14:23, Jesus said:

“If a man loves me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

Let us keep His words, live His words, and honor His words above all others. For in Christ alone is the truth, the way, and the life.

In John 14:6, Jesus said:

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
