What Does It Mean to Believe?
Jesus declared: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3:14–16)
These words raise one of the most important questions in the lives of every believer: What does it truly mean to believe? Unfortunately, many believers have been taught that to simply believe a few facts concerning that Jesus existed or agreeing that He was a good man who taught good morals is not enough.
Belief Is More Than Mental Agreement
From the Gospel perspective, believing is not merely acknowledging facts about Christ. It is: Coming into a place in one’s life in which a person puts complete trust in Him, through receiving and believing His word.
The importance of the WORDS OF JESUS cannot be underestimated. Hearing His Word produces faith in a person to reach out in simple trust to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. The salvation that comes through faith in Christ produces a dependence on His work of salvation, and following Him.
Jesus said: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. “(John 5:24) .. Here, belief involves hearing Christ’s words, trusting the Father who sent Him, and receiving the gift of eternal life.
True Belief Produces a Changed Life
Biblical faith is never passive. Genuine belief transforms the heart and is demonstrated by a life that continues in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not through the mere repeating of a prayer; salvation is not received as a one-off decision that was made through emotion.
Jesus declared: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.”(John 8:31). A true disciple does not merely hear Christ’s words; they continue in them. This is of tremendous importance that must be received as a revealed truth: A belief that does not affect how a person lives is not the belief, it is never what Jesus described.
Belief Means Agreeing With the Father
To believe is to come into wholehearted agreement with Almighty God’s revealed truth. It is embracing His Word as absolute truth, trusting it completely, and allowing it to govern every area of life. This agreement is far more than intellectual acceptance. It is an agreement of the heart that produces faith, surrender, and obedience and an on going experience of becoming a follower of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.“(John 14:15) Love for Christ is demonstrated through obedience. Therefore, genuine belief, biblical faith cannot be separated from a willingness to follow Him.
Even Demons Believe the Facts
There is an enormously important distinction between knowing the truth and trusting Christ. James wrote: “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” (James 2:19) Demons acknowledge the truth about God, yet they remain in rebellion. Their belief is merely recognition of fact, and never a personal loving submission. This clearly shows that biblical belief is much more than intellectual assent.
The Meaning of Biblical Faith
Genuine”believe” carries the meaning of trusting, relying upon, placing confidence in, and committing oneself to another. To believe in Christ, therefore, is to entrust one’s whole life to Him not simply to accept that He exists. True biblical belief: Can be summed up as follows: A person receives the Words of Jesus Christ as the words ordained of the Father.
Through the word faith, trust and confidence in the person of Jesus Christ is produced in a believer’s life. The Words of Jesus Christ becomes our total source of assurance of our commitment to place our lives into His care.
There must be the requirement to commit to continue in His words to walk in the freedom as children of Almighty God. Believing in Jesus is far more than agreeing with the Gospel message. It is placing complete confidence in Him, submitting to His Lordship, and allowing His Word to shape every part of life.
True belief is agreement with God’s revealed truth that transforms the heart, produces unwavering trust in Christ, and is made visible through a life of loving obedience. This is the kind of faith Jesus calls every believer to embrace: a faith that not only confesses Him with the lips but follows Him with the whole heart.
