Why Fear Men When You Have Faith In God?
The Scriptures reveal two very different kinds of fear. One Jesus commands His disciples to reject; the other He commands them to embrace. “Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul.“(Matthew 10:28)
“Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. ( Luke 12:4 )“This fear is terror, intimidation, and anxiety over what people may say or do. It is important that, as believers, we receive the revelation that Jesus Christ repeatedly warned His followers not to live in fear of man.
We must understand that Jesus never promised us as His disciples that following Him would be an easy path. As in the lives of the disciples, so too will we face rejection, persecution, and false accusations, just as He was.
Listen prayerfully to the admonishment of Jesus when He declared: The disciple is not above his master… If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? Fear them not therefore.” ( Matthew 10:24)
The opinions, threats, and persecution of men must never govern the believer’s life. Christ alone is to be obeyed. There is, however, a Holy fear that every believer must possess. This is not terror but reverence, awe, worship, and wholehearted submission to Almighty God.“Rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)
“Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.” ( Luke 12:5 )The fear of the Lord produces obedience, humility, and steadfast faith.
This is important we must guard against fear robbing us of the blessings of the Lord. We have an object lesson in the account of Jesus and Jairus. Jairus came to Jesus believing his daughter could be healed. After hearing the devastating news, “Your daughter is dead,” Jesus immediately answered, “Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole”( Luke 8:50 )
Jesus would not allow fear to have the final word. Jairus chose to trust Christ rather than the hopeless report. When they arrived, Jesus put the unbelieving mourners outside, took the girl by the hand, and said, “Maid, arise” Her spirit returned immediately, and she lived.( Luke 8:54-55)
Fear says, “It is over.” Faith says, “Jesus has spoken.” Believers must never allow fear to steal what faith is prepared to receive from the Father, but must choose the voice of Christ above every contrary circumstance.
Jesus also warned His disciples against anxious living. “Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.” (Luke 12:31) The Father feeds the ravens and clothes the lilies with splendour greater than Solomon’s glory. If He faithfully cares for His creation, how much more will He care for those who belong to Him?
Instead of living in worry, Jesus gives one command: “Seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 )Jesus concludes with one of the greatest assurances ever given to His disciples: “Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.( Luke 12:32) Fear and faith cannot rule the heart at the same time. Fear looks at circumstances; faith looks to Christ. Fear listens to the world’s report; faith rests upon the Word of God.
