Why Should We Listen To The Words Of Jesus?
That is a question every person must answer, because eternal life depends upon it. Jesus declared: “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. If anyone desires to do His will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.” (John 7:16–17)
Jesus Christ makes it unmistakably clear that His teaching did not originate from Himself. Every word that He spoke came from the Father who sent Him. Therefore, to hear Jesus is to hear the voice of the Father, and this is very important for anyone saved or unsaved; to reject the words of Jesus Christ is to reject the One who sent Him.
The Lord also said: “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” (John 12:49–50)
These words leave no room for compromise. Jesus spoke with the full authority of the Father, and His words lead to everlasting life. They are not merely to be admired or discussed; they are to be believed, obeyed, and lived.
The challenge, therefore, is not whether a person has heard the words of Jesus, but whether they are willing to submit to them. Those who truly desire to do the Father’s will will recognise His voice in the teachings of His Son. Genuine faith is demonstrated by obedience, not merely by agreement.
The conclusion is inescapable: we should listen to Jesus because He speaks the very words of the Father. His words are truth, they reveal the Father’s will, and they lead to eternal life.
He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. John 12:48.
