The Father Is Righteous
“O righteous Father, the world has not known You, but I have known You, and these have known that You sent Me.”  John 17:25

Jesus Christ could simply have said, “Father,” yet He declared, “O righteous Father.” In doing so, He revealed one of the eternal attributes of Almighty God. The righteousness of the Father is inseparable from His holiness, truth, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Every attribute of the Father is perfectly united within His divine nature. The Scriptures declare: “The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works.”  Psalm 145:17

The Meaning of the Father’s Righteousness.

This foundational truth must be established in the hearts of believers: the Father’s righteousness is His holiness revealed in action. His righteousness is also the perfect standard of His justice. Because Almighty God is righteous, He always acts according to what is true, holy, and right.

The Father cannot depart from His own righteous nature without denying Himself. Therefore, evil cannot remain unjudged before Him. His righteousness governs His judgments, His mercy, and His dealings with humanity. Through His righteousness:

He rewards faithfulness.
He establishes justice.
He judges sin.
He upholds truth.
He works righteousness in the lives of those who follow Him.
The righteousness of the Father is not merely a doctrine; it is the expression of His Holy character.

Jesus Christ Revealed the Father’s Righteousness

The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ was the visible manifestation of the Father’s righteousness. This was openly revealed at the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist:

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptised by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by You, and are You coming to me?’  But Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he allowed Him.”  Matthew 3:13–15

Jesus Christ submitted Himself to baptism, not because He needed repentance, but because He came to fulfil the righteous will of the Father completely. When He came up from the water, the Father publicly affirmed the righteousness of His Son.

“The heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’”  Matthew 3:16–17

The Promised Messiah Revealed Through Righteousness

The prophets had long foretold that the Messiah would minister in righteousness. “He shall judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with justice.”  Psalm 72:2

Every word that Jesus Christ spoke and every work He performed revealed that He was the promised Messiah sent from the Father. His ministry unfolded exactly according to the prophetic Scriptures.

Jesus declared: “For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son.”  John 5:22. And again: “I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”  John 5:30

Jesus Christ judged according to the will of the Father. His judgments were never based upon outward appearance, human tradition, or fleshly reasoning. Everything He did flowed from perfect obedience to the Father.

Righteous Judgment

Throughout His ministry, Jesus Christ confronted the religious leaders who judged according to outward appearances rather than the heart and will of Almighty God. After healing the impotent man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath, Jesus declared: “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”  John 7:24

The Pharisees judged according to human standards, but Jesus judged according to the righteousness of the Father. Jesus declared: “You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. And yet if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.”  John 8:15–16

Jesus was revealing that true judgment comes through alignment with the Father’s perfect will and truth.

Grace, Truth, and Righteousness Revealed Through Christ

The Gospel of John reveals the fullness of Christ’s ministry: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”  John 1:14

Jesus Christ was the full revelation of the Father’s nature to humanity. Through Him, righteousness, mercy, peace, grace, and truth were manifested openly before the world. The Scriptures declare: “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.”  Psalm 85:10

In Jesus Christ, these divine attributes were perfectly united. Grace was mercy in action. Truth proceeded from His lips. Righteousness governed His life. Peace flowed through His ministry. Every healing, every miracle, every act of compassion revealed the Father working through the Son.

The Conviction of Righteousness

Before His crucifixion, Jesus declared that the Holy Spirit would come to convict the world: “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”  John 16:8

The Holy Spirit continues to testify of the righteousness revealed in Jesus Christ. Through the finished work of redemption, believers are called into a life that reflects the righteousness of the Father. Righteousness is the standard of life for those who belong to the Kingdom of God.

Jesus Christ Fully Pleased the Father

Jesus could openly say: “He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do those things that please Him.”  John 8:29

Every word spoken by Jesus, every step He walked, every act of mercy He performed, and every judgment He rendered flowed from perfect obedience to the Father. His entire ministry was the revelation of righteousness in action.

When Jesus submitted Himself to baptism, He established the pattern for all who would follow Him. He demonstrated complete obedience to the Father’s will and fulfilled all righteousness. The righteousness revealed in Jesus Christ was not partial, selective, or outward only. It was the continual manifestation of the Father’s will through a life wholly yielded to Him.

The earthly ministry of Jesus Christ revealed the righteousness of the Father openly before humanity. Every miracle, every word of truth, every act of compassion, and every righteous judgment testified that the Father was working through His Son.

The Father still desires righteousness in those who follow His Son. Through the finished work of Jesus Christ and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, believers are called to walk in truth, obedience, holiness, and righteousness before Almighty God.

The life of Jesus Christ remains the eternal standard. Every believer who follows Jesus Christ is called not merely to admire His righteousness, but to yield themselves fully to the will of the Father, so that the righteousness of the Father may also be revealed through their lives.

Jesus Christ did not live independently of the Father. He walked in complete obedience, complete dependence, and complete righteousness.
