Jesus Is The True Vine

“I am the true vine, and My Father is the husbandman. Every branch in Me that bears not fruit He takes away, and every branch that bears fruit He purges it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”John 15:1–3.

Jesus Christ, in His instruction and teachings, used natural objects to illustrate important truths to both His own disciples and to the multitudes who followed Him.

In this teaching, we have Jesus Christ addressing His disciples, using as an illustration the vine and its branches to describe the lives of believers and their dependence on Him.

In the example of the vine, Jesus Christ is proclaiming the revelation that the vine is the most essential element in producing the fruit of the vine. This truth must be perfectly understood: the vine does not depend on the branches; it’s the other way around.

The branches can only function because of their dependance of being attached to the vine.  If we choose to be separated from the vine, there is no life, no strength, and no sustenance in the branches; herein is a vital truth that every believer must embrace: every believer is a branch.

Jesus Christ declared Himself to be not just any ordinary vine; He is the True Vine, the true and living source from which every believer must draw their life, nourishment, and purpose. To be joined to Him, to remain in Jesus Christ, is to live; But the warning is crystal clear that to be severed from Him is to result in decay and death.

The Father, as the Husbandman.

The role of the husbandman is to tend and examine each branch with divine care. The Father, being our Husbandman, removes what is fruitless.  He executes His duty through righteous purpose, and He refines what is fruitful through loving discipline.

Purging is the working of the Father’s mercy at work, pruning enables the branch to bear more abundant fruit for the glory of His Name. The cleansing Word of Jesus Christ works deeply within those who receive it, cutting away what hinders and strengthening what remains. Therefore, through His Word and by His Holy Spirit in our lives, every abiding believer should be a vessel fit for fruitfulness and honour in His vineyard.

Total Dependence In The Vine

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can you, except you abide in Me. I am the Vine, you are the branches: He that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:4–5

A severed branch withers because its strength was never its own. Jesus Christ calls for our total dependence on Him; we can exist only because the life in us is His life. Herein is an important truth for every believer: to abide in Christ is the responsibility of our actions, our will being given over to the supreme will of the Father.

It is our responsibility and our accountability to be faithful in our relationship with Jesus Christ; we have to be in continual union with His life, His words, and His will.

The fruit that the Father seeks cannot be produced by human effort, but only through abiding in our fellowship with the Son. Jesus Christ will never cast us off; this is our divine and blessed assurance: All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

The Need To Continue To Abide

“If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered, and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.”.John 15:6

Herein is a vital truth that every believer must understand; it may never be preached from the pulpit, and ministers may remain silent, but there is a serious warning that comes from the eternal voice of Jesus Christ Himself, and every believer has the responsibility to receive this warning for themselves.

To withdraw from Jesus Christ is to sever the very flow of life that sustains the lives of every born-again believer.  This truth must be fully understood: Jesus Christ is not the one who casts us off, it is the consequence of our failing to remain in Him

Abide In Jesus’s Word

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you.” John 15:7

Abiding in Jesus Christ is of tremendous importance, but it must be noted that Jesus lays before our lives a vital condition that must be applied to our lives; we must have His Word abiding in us.

I am reminded of a Word of exhortation in which the Lord declared: I am seeking, calling out into hearts and into lives for My word must come as first into your hearts and lives, knowing that it’s My Word of Spirit, My word of life, My Word of power, and My word that will sustain your lives.

The promises, commands, and truth of Jesus Christ must dwell richly in the hearts of all who profess a belief and commitment to Him. When His Word governs our lives and our will, then we have this firm assurance of answered prayer.

Fruit-bearing Glorifies The Father

“Herein is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; so shall you be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you: continue you in My love.” John 15:8–10

The Father, being glorified in the lives of believers, must be our own personal desire. If we are truly followers of Jesus Christ, then the ambition of our hearts must be to be pleasing in the eyes of our heavenly Father just as Jesus was.

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!Matthew 17:1-5.

The same love that the Father bestowed upon Jesus Christ is now extended to those who remain in Him. In this love, obedience is not a burden, but a joy, for His commandment becomes the lifeblood of the disciple’s walk.

The Need To Abide In His Love

“If you keep My commandments, you shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is My commandment, That you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:9–13

Love is the fruit that proves the life of the Vine within. To keep His commandments is to remain in the flow of divine love, the same love that compelled Jesus Christ to obedience and sacrifice. Joy and love are inseparable in the life of the abiding believer. The greatest expression of both is seen in the laying down of one’s life for others.

Who Jesus Calls His Friends

“You are My friends, if you do whatsoever I command you. I no longer call you servants; for the servant knows not what his lord does: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you.” John 15:14–15

Now, we are called to examine friendship from Jesus’ perspective, which will not sit comfortably with some believers. Jesus Christ issues to every believer the expression of true friendship that He demands; that is, our friendship with Him is not valued by what is said through our lips, but through that which is worked in and through our lives, our actions therefore must speak louder than our words.

To be called a friend of Jesus Christ is to live in the light of His truth, to walk in the knowledge of the Father’s will, and to obey from love, not mere religious duty.

Chosen And Ordained

“You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in My Name, He may give it you. These things I command you, that you love one another.”  John 15:16–17

Jesus Christ chose and appointed His followers to bear fruit that lasts. This is the fruit that remains; it is the evidence of abiding faith, love, and obedience. The believer’s prayers, offered in His Name, flow from a heart aligned with His purpose and therefore receive the Father’s answer. Love and obedience continue to be the central commands, the unmistakable mark of those who belong to the Vine.

Hated By The World

“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love his own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” John 15:18–19

As believers, although we live in this world, our lives should not be governed by the ways of this world. Jesus Christ has declared that we are not of this world, but we are of the Father.

Therefore, there is a cost in our abiding in Jesus Christ; we will not be loved by the world. If we are truly living in the light of His word, we shall be hated by the world. Those who belong to Jesus Christ will share His rejection, for they share His life. Being chosen out of the world means bearing His likeness and sharing His sufferings.

Believers And Persecution

“Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for My Name’s sake, because they know not Him that sent Me.” John 15:20–21

The abiding disciple is never greater than his Lord. To remain in the Vine is to share not only His fruitfulness but also His sufferings. The path of the true disciple follows the same road the Master walked, one of obedience, rejection, and ultimate victory.

Persecution, therefore, is identification with Christ. It is the mark of belonging, the proof that the life of the Vine flows within the branch. The branch cannot bear fruit apart from the Vine, and the vine without fruit is not the Father’s will.

To abide is to live in continual surrender, drawing strength, love, and purpose from Christ alone. The measure of abiding is not appearance, but in the fruit that glorifies the Father, reflects the Son, and endures the testing of the world.

Every true branch must remain in the Vine, for apart from Him there is no life, no love, and no lasting joy.
