The Ministry of Jesus Far Greater Than John the Baptist..
John declared:“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”Matthew 3:11–12
John the Baptist unmistakably proclaimed the vast difference between his and that of Jesus’s ministry that was to come. It is important to understand that although John the Baptist could preach repentance and baptise the people in water, he could not impart the life of Almighty God. His baptism was preparatory in pointing the people toward the One who was coming.
When John declared, “He that comes after me is mightier than I.”He was not simply acknowledging that Jesus would be a greater preacher or teacher; he was declaring that Jesus Christ possessed an authority and ministry of an entirely different and higher order than his.
Whereas John could, through his preaching, bring the people to the point of repentance, Jesus would bring them into the life of Almighty God. John used water from the earth to baptise the people, whereas the baptism wrought through Jesus Christ would be through the Holy Spirit, heaven-sent by the Father.
When John made the declaration “He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost,” this was revealing something fundamental about the ministry of Jesus. The ministry of Jesus would not merely improve the religious life of people. His coming would bring about a divine transformation from within.
This is of tremendous importance to glean the ministry of Jesus Christ; it goes way beyond mere external religious observance. Jesus would bring those who would believe into the living operation of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ does not merely demand a changed life; He provides the divine power through which that life can be lived.
The Fire Of Jesus’Ministry
John declared that Jesus would baptize “with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” When speaking of fire, it is synonymous with relating to Almighty God’s holiness, purity, and consuming work. Throughout His public ministry, Jesus did not go around merely comforting the people; through His teachings, Jesus not only brought confrontation to the religious authorities, His words were to bring about purification and transformation towards the multitudes.
Through His coming, it was not to simply make the people feel better about themselves; His ministry was to make them new. Through the purging fire of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit operating through Jesus Christ, His presence exposed what was false and moved to bring the light of revelation of the holy standard that was demanded of the Father.
As believers, it is so critical to present Jesus Christ not only as Saviour and Lord, but also to reveal His power to sanctify those who will believe in Him. We must present to the world that not only does Jesus forgive the sins of the transgressors, but His forgiveness works to bring people out of the things that entrap them in sin. The life that He gives produces a new way of living.
John continued: “Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor.”The revelation that we are to gain from this verse of Scripture is the illustration of a farm worker separating the precious wheat grain from the useless chaff; this speaks of the work of separation of sinner from sin.“
John continued to declare: He will gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” The wheat represents those who belong to God. Jesus gathers His own and gives them eternal life: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: and I give unto them eternal life. ” John 10:27–28
The ministry of Jesus is therefore both powerful and deeply personal. He calls, He gathers, He keeps, and He gives eternal life. The believer’s life is ultimately found not in human strength, but in the faithfulness and authority of Christ.
The passage also carries a solemn warning: “But He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”The same Jesus who saves is also the appointed Judge: “For the Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment unto the Son.”John 5:22
Jesus Christ is not merely another religious teacher or voice among many. He is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, and the One before whom every person will ultimately stand. His ministry and His call to humanity must therefore never be treated casually.
Jesus Christ calls people to repentance, faith, obedience, holiness, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Jesus said: “But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto Me.”Acts 1:8
It is so important that as believers we fully endorse the ministry of Jesus Christ, presenting its pattern:
- Jesus calls.
- Jesus cleanses,
- Jesus fills.
- Jesus empowers.
- Jesus sends.
The believer therefore ministers not from personal ability, but from the life and power received from Christ. Jesus came to accomplish what humanity could never accomplish for itself: He came to save the lost, give eternal life, reconcile people to the Father, baptize with the Holy Spirit, purify His people, gather His own, and ultimately judge all things in righteousness. The ministry of Jesus therefore demands more than admiration. It demands faith, surrender, obedience, and allegiance to Him.
